Nate Smith is a drummer whose sound is as singular as his musical journey, which has seen him learn from the greats as a sidemanaand collaborator before embarking on groundbreaking solo projects as a leader. Known primarily for his work in jazz, Smith has never left behind his formative influences in funk and urban styles, and his work is testament to a curious and open musical mind. He comes to Prague Sounds with a trio that includes bassist Michael League, bandleader of Snarky Puppy.
One of Smith's early mentors was legendary jazz vocalist Betty Carter, with whom he played regualrly at the Blue Note in New York. He went on to play in Dave Holland's quintet, recording two albums with the acclaimed bassist, and also became a close collaborator of saxophonist Chris Potter. Smith's discography is replete with major names both within and without jazz: Patricia Barber, Randy Brecker, Paul Simon, Jose James – and he even has a credit as co-writer/producer on Michael Jackson's song 'Heaven Can Wait,' from Jackson's 2001 Invincible album.
'Nate Smith is all about carving his own path. But he also understands the importance of paying dues to those who blazed the trail before him, as well as those who walk beside him'
Downbeat
Nate Smith's solo career reflects this openness to style and genre, and his first forays as a leader received instantaneous critical acclaim. His solo albums KINFOLK: Postcards from Everywhere (2017) and Kinfolk 2: See The Birds (2021) were nominated for two Grammys apiece, and critics were quick to praise their blending of jazz with influences of contemporary soul and hip-hop, which led to comparisons with Prague Sounds alumnus Robert Glasper. It's fair to say that Smith has achieved cult status among music fans and musicians, and his festival concert offers a chance to experience this exceptional player up-close and personal.
