Nicknamed the 'Japanese jazz hurricane,' pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara has been an extraordinary musical phenomenon from an early age, and her reputation continues to grow with the passing years. A pivotal moment came at 17, and a fateful meeting with Chick Corea. He was so captivated by her playing that he invited her to join him on stage at his Tokyo concert the very next day. Her next steps led straight to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where she found another legendary admirer in Ahmad Jamal.
From the beginning, Hiromi’s work has balanced virtuosity with limitless imagination. Since 2011, she has performed with her trio, blending jazz-rock, classical technique, and contemporary rhythmic influences into a thrilling whole. On her current album Out There, Hiromi tailors her compositions specifically to each musician, deepening their interplay even further. The centerpiece of the album is a four-part suite that functions as a cohesive musical narrative encompassing a spectrum from explosive energy to introspective moods. Hiromi calls it a return to creative freedom. In Prague, she will perform with drummer Simon Phillips and bassist James Genus, who has played alongside Herbie Hancock and Daft Punk.
“Hiromi has discovered her own genre.”
