Ten November concerts, ten unique experiences. The 29th Prague Sounds runs from November 1st to 19th, and one standout feature this year is a focus on unique and compelling women artists, alongside big names in electronic music, contemporary classical, hip-hop, jazz, and r&b.
There's a range of Grammy winners in the lineup - Mexican songwriter Silvana Estrada makes her Czech debut, Arooj Aftab brings her intoxicating mix of Pakistani music and jazz, and Cecile McLorin Salvant, considered by many the greatest jazz singer of her generation, will show that there's more to her music than jazz alone. Also fresh from a Grammy win, the New York ensemble So Percussion come to the Czech Republic for the first time, with groundbreaking young composer Caroline Shaw, herself a 5-time Grammy winner. Shaw returns to the festival four years after her debut appearance.
Electronica pioneer Alva Noto teams up with another giant of the genre, Fennesz, for a special project paying tribute to the Japanese composer Ryuchi Sakamoto. Another visionary of electronica, Oneohtrix Point Never, brings his spectacular audio-visual show to Nova Spirala, while Kurt Wagner, the frontman of the legendary Lambchop, presents the band's finest songs in an intimate set-up of just voice and piano. Nate Smith, one of the most influential and acclaimed drummers in the jazz world, brings to Prague a trio featuring Snarky Puppy bassist Michael League.
And Prague Sounds continues its tradition of new discoveries in contemporary hip-hop and urban music, this time presenting Trinidad-born, London-based Berwyn, whose music mixes the political and the personal with rap, r&b, and neo-soul. On the same bill, we can look forward to Berlin's explosive Moses Yoofee Trio. The curated 'Choice' evening, showcasing local artists, is this year helmed by rapper and producer Idea, and features Champion Sound and Laokoon. Tickets for all concerts now available here.
